The Baltimore Orioles are set to sign free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, according to reports from Mike Rodriguez. The deal is pending a physical, and the team has not yet made an official announcement.
Seattle designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had initially obtained him from Texas via waiver claim in early May, but Taveras later elected free agency.
Taveras has played five seasons in the majors, primarily with the Texas Rangers. He made his MLB debut in 2020 as a part-time player. Over his first three seasons, he struggled offensively but consistently displayed quality defense and speed in center field.
In 2023, Taveras took on a full-time role, appearing in 143 games. Across his 554 plate appearances, he produced a .266/.312/.421 line with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases. His strong season secured his place for 2024, although his offensive numbers dipped.
He finished 2024 with an 84 wRC+ and a .229 average but set a personal best with 23 stolen bases.
Before the 2024 season, Taveras qualified for arbitration thanks to his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed to a $4.75 million deal for 2025. However, Texas’ luxury tax situation led to trade speculation, and despite retaining him, Taveras’ performance declined further.
He wrapped up his stint in Texas with a .241/.259 batting line before becoming available on the free market.
Leody Taveras, known for his defense and speed, joins the Orioles after inconsistent hitting seasons with Texas and Seattle but remains a promising addition to their outfield depth.
