Brahim Kaddour-Cherif, 24, was mistakenly released from HMP Wandsworth in south-west London last Wednesday, according to police reports. The incident was reported to the Metropolitan Police only yesterday, raising questions about procedural oversight.
It has now been confirmed that Kaddour-Cherif previously committed a sex offence during a period when he was unlawfully at large. The offence occurred after he failed to attend a court hearing for burglary charges in early 2024.
Kaddour-Cherif was sentenced to an 18-month community order and placed on the sex offenders' register for five years.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the mistaken release was reported one day after it occurred. An internal review has been initiated to determine how the error happened and whether procedures were properly followed.
The case exposes serious lapses in prison release procedures, as a previously convicted offender was mistakenly freed, prompting a renewed examination of correctional system safeguards.
