Australia Captain Alyssa Healy Reflects on Women’s World Cup Semifinal Loss

Seven-time champions Australia suffered a surprising semifinal defeat against India in Navi Mumbai last week, as Harmanpreet Kaur and her team captured their first World Cup title.

End of Australia’s Winning Streak

Australia’s remarkable ICC Women’s World Cup winning streak ended in a dramatic semifinal, with India advancing to eventually win the tournament on Sunday. Back home, captain Alyssa Healy shared her thoughts on the loss.

“At the end of the day, after seven weeks of a long tour, we played some incredible cricket but didn’t quite overcome a certain Indian hurdle,” Healy said on the Willow Talk Cricket podcast. “Disappointing in that regard, but I’m excited to see what this team can do in the next cycle because it’s really exciting.”

Looking Ahead with Optimism

Healy praised the team’s performance throughout the tournament, noting how other teams have had to work hard to beat them.

“We are playing some amazing cricket, and teams have to keep up to knock us off, which I think is really cool. Obviously I haven’t watched the final, but India got themselves over the line, which is great for the global game,” she added.

Feeling the Disappointment

Though proud of her team’s efforts, Healy admitted the defeat would linger with her for a while.

“It was an amazing experience, but sitting here, I’m a little disappointed and it’ll haunt me for a bit—but that’s okay,” she said.

Reflections on the Semifinal Performance

Australia’s total score of 338 in the semifinal was impressive, though Healy acknowledged they left some runs unused.

She felt the team could have posted an even higher total to strengthen their chances.
