Iran has unveiled a Christian-themed metro station in Tehran, despite controversy over religious persecution.
Inside the Maryam-e Moqaddas station, or Holy Mary station, a plaque reads:
“the message of Jesus Christ was the salvation of humans from darkness, ignorance, corruption, depravity and discrimination.”
The station also features a relief of Christ walking on water and a depiction of Mary praying among flowers.
State media has characterized the station's name and motif as a gesture of cultural coexistence, noting that Mary is a venerated figure in Islam.
