City of Nanaimo Updates Fines for Water Use Violations and Vandalism
The City of Nanaimo has passed three readings of a bylaw to update fines for water use violations and vandalism for the first time in nearly 20 years.
According to city documents, Nanaimo has experienced increasing vandalism and tampering with water infrastructure, including:
- turning on fire hydrants
- hooking up to fire hydrants without a permit to get free water
- rendering hydrants inoperative by removing parts from them
“As a deterrent, the city is looking to compare itself to other communities and increase its fines for tampering with such assets to match what other municipalities are doing,”
said Sheila Gurrie, director of legislative services.
