Two years ago, we addressed the tragic losses of student life at Middlebury, emphasizing that such events should never become routine. Unfortunately, the recent death of Lia Smith '26 marks the fourth student death on campus in six years.
The college's response to these deaths has been inadequate, and student death has become embedded in the school's culture. After the deaths of Ivan Valerio '26 and Evelyn Mae Sorensen '25 in 2023, Middlebury allocated funding towards mental health resources, including hiring more full-time staff and counselors.
The death of another student who belonged to a marginalized community screams that something is still missing.
Despite these efforts, the continued occurrence of student deaths highlights the need for more comprehensive mental health support resources. The college must re-examine its approach to addressing the mental health needs of its students.
