ACCC takes Microsoft to court over pricier Copilot 365 plans
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) alleges that Microsoft misled customers into paying more for Microsoft 365 subscriptions with the inclusion of Copilot.
Australia’s consumer watchdog is taking Microsoft to court over “allegedly misleading approximately 2.7 million Australian customers” by not clearly communicating all personal and family Microsoft 365 plan options after introducing Copilot AI features.
As part of its Federal Court proceedings, the ACCC alleges that Microsoft misled customers into paying more for a 365 subscription by not clearly disclosing all options.
- The price of an individual annual Microsoft 365 subscription increased from $109 to $159 — more than a 45 per cent increase.
- However, customers could retain a $109 annual subscription without Copilot features, called “Microsoft 365 Personal Classic”, by attempting to cancel their subscription.
