Sharks Locker Room: Just As Important As Win? Askarov in Loss

Sharks Locker Room: Yaroslav Askarov's Performance in Loss

Yaroslav Askarov's 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Friday may be just as significant as the San Jose Sharks' first win on Thursday. Despite the loss, Askarov had his best game of the season, stopping 27 of 29 shots.

As a top prospect, much is expected of Askarov, especially after the Sharks traded the equivalent of two first-round picks for him in 2024. San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky noted that external pressure may be affecting Askarov's performance, saying:

Maybe it's the outside perspective [that] he needs to carry the world on his shoulders, and he's probably feeling that pressure a little bit.

Prior to this game, Askarov had struggled in his previous three starts, posting an .838 save percentage and -3.23 goals saved above expected, according to Evolving Hockey.

Author's summary: Askarov's performance in loss is a promising sign for the Sharks.
