The federal government has completed the assessment of the business case for the Sydney-Newcastle High-Speed Rail project, confirming its commitment to progressing the project.
Infrastructure Australia has been reviewing the business case since December, with industry experts estimating the cost of Stage 1 (Sydney to Newcastle) to be between $30 billion and $40 billion.
"I don't want to mislead the Senate or the estimates hearing, and the range and the cost is dependent on the government's decision,"said High Speed Rail Authority chief executive Tim Parker, declining to comment on costs during a Senate estimates hearing.
The project's progress is a significant development in the country's infrastructure plans.
