New Monument to Honour Navan's Miners

A call has been made by the Meath Council of Trade Unions for a new sculpture to honour Navan's miners, to be located near the Andy Connolly Roundabout.

The existing 'On the Great Wide Open' sculpture, which pays tribute to the mining industry, is set to be relocated as Meath County Council prepares for the new LDR4 road.

The current monument does not reflect the image of a current day miner.

According to John Regan, chairman of Meath Council of Trade Unions, this is a concern for miners.

Council officials will present on the sculpture's future location at a Navan Municipal Council meeting.

Author's summary: New monument sought for Navan miners.
