On August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House for what Trump touted as a “historic peace summit.”

As with the president’s unsuccessful high-profile efforts to broker a truce between Russia and Ukraine, this might have seemed an extravagant overbilling.

After all, for more than 30 years, the two South Caucasus countries have been implacable adversaries.

They have fought two wars, and their populations are steeped in mutually opposing historical narratives.
