The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has released an online map that highlights the suitability of various geothermal energy applications across the region. This initiative aims to support investment and project development by providing a strategic basis for using geothermal energy efficiently within the canton.
The new geothermal suitability map is intended to promote targeted geothermal energy use, contributing to a sustainable and secure energy supply. It focuses especially on shallow heat extraction methods such as ground source heat pumps, which play a key role in decarbonization efforts.
Geothermal energy "already makes a significant contribution to a sustainable and secure energy supply and to decarbonization (target: net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050)."
In March 2022, the Cantonal Government responded to a motion from the Grand Council to develop a geothermal register identifying potential energy sources within Aargau’s municipalities. Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, alongside experts, conducted a detailed assessment of the geothermal potential in the canton.
