Stanford Children's Hospital to Modernize After $25 Million Donation

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford will undergo major renovations following a $25 million philanthropic gift from Carol and Ned Spieker. The donation is set to transform the hospital’s West Building and enhance care for mothers and newborns.

Transformation of the West Building

Stanford Medicine Children’s Health plans to renovate the West Building, including the Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services. The modernization aims to offer patients greater privacy and families improved comfort while receiving care.

Support from the Spiekers

The gift from Bay Area benefactors Carol and Ned Spieker will significantly support these changes. The couple expressed a personal connection to the hospital, noting that their own children and grandchildren were born there.

“We care deeply about helping growing families in our community get the best possible care,” the Spiekers said. “We feel fortunate that they are healthy and thriving, and we want to help ensure that future generations of moms and babies receive the support they need.”

Hospital Leadership's Response

“[Carol and Ned Spieker’s] generosity helps turn our vision for a completely reimagined space into reality — to serve and support more families from our community and beyond,” said Luanne Smedley, executive director of the Johnson Center, in an email to The Daily.

Impact and Community Reach

According to Smedley, the hospital helps deliver about 4,500 babies each year—approximately twelve every day—and around seventy percent of these cases are considered high-risk. This renovation is expected to further improve outcomes for those families.
