Uwan intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced.
The super typhoon is packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph), with gusts reaching up to 230 kph. It was last located 125 kilometers east-northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, moving west-northwest at 25 kph.
Pagasa raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 in the Polillo Islands, several parts of Camarines Norte, and Catanduanes. Signal No. 5 warns of extreme life-threatening conditions due to typhoon-force winds of 185 kph or higher expected within the next twelve hours.
