Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston strongly condemned a new order forbidding court workers from wearing poppies while on duty. He expressed his disapproval of the measure, which was issued by judges earlier this week.
"This is disgusting," Houston declared on X. "The poppy is not a political statement. It is a symbol of remembrance and respect for the fallen and those who served and continue to serve our country."
Houston highlighted that poppies have been worn nationwide since 1921 and emphasized that the judges who implemented the order were mistaken.
"We have courts and a democracy because of the courage of those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of, and in defence of, the very rights and freedoms we enjoy."
While respecting the independence of the judiciary, Houston affirmed his greater respect for veterans who sacrificed their lives to defend the country's values and democracy.
Houston’s comments were part of a public reaction to preserve the recognition of veterans through the poppy emblem despite judicial restrictions.
