Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux announced he will resign his seat in the House of Commons following days of speculation about his possible defection to the governing Liberals.
Jeneroux informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday of his decision to resign at an unspecified date. In a letter obtained by National Post, the Edmonton Riverbend MP described the choice as difficult but ultimately the right one.
"It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one."
The resignation comes unexpectedly, considering Jeneroux was first elected in 2015 and did not elaborate on the reasons for his departure. His note showed respect for members across party lines, mentioning admiration for "the many remarkable individuals" on both sides of the House of Commons.
Jeneroux’s letter “barely makes mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre but notes his admiration ‘for the many remarkable individuals’ on ‘both sides of the aisle’ of the House of Commons.”
This event marks the second dramatic Conservative departure in three days, delivering a significant setback to party leader Pierre Poilievre less than three months before a leadership review scheduled for January.
The sudden resignation of Matt Jeneroux highlights underlying tensions within the Conservative Party and challenges facing its leadership in the months ahead.
