Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

Zelda's journey into Hyrule's ancient past establishes Age of Imprisonment as the best installment in the Hyrule Warriors series so far. While playing, the story of Tears of the Kingdom was fresh in my mind, alongside Age of Calamity and its take on Breath of the Wild's backstory.

Although Zelda games have always included story elements, recent entries seemed like missed opportunities despite their potential. I appreciated the concept of a behind-the-scenes narrative in Tears of the Kingdom, set after Breath of the Wild, but several key areas felt lacking.

On paper, Age of Imprisonment delivers everything I hoped for from that original plot, filling in many gaps to present a more emotional story. Yet, like Tears of the Kingdom, its success ultimately hinges on execution and being a strong Warriors game.

"It's all well and good then that it's a sleeper hit for my personal game of the year."

Assuming a basic familiarity with Dynasty Warriors, Age of Imprisonment stands out by blending that combat style with a deeply engaging Zelda narrative.

Summary: Age of Imprisonment becomes a standout in the Hyrule Warriors series by finally delivering a compelling story and gameplay execution that meets the promise of its predecessors.
