The upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday carries immense expectations. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a global force, its cultural momentum has slowed compared to its peak years. The recent Fantastic Four: First Steps earned over $500 million—respectable, but modest by Marvel standards.
With the fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film poised for success, the MCU now turns toward its long-anticipated crossover event. Avengers: Doomsday has already faced major changes, including shifting away from Jonathan Majors as the lead villain, replacing the director, introducing characters from the Fox-era X-Men, and convincing Robert Downey Jr. to return as Doctor Doom—a move likely involving a substantial paycheck.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted that the next two Avengers movies may serve as a grand finale for the current iteration of the MCU, setting the stage for a potential reboot. That alone would make Doomsday a defining entry, but actor Simu Liu has taken excitement even further by teasing that the movie will deliver genuine emotional depth.
“I mean, there are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them,” he said. “It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that.”
His comments suggest the film aims to celebrate the superhero genre itself—a blend of blockbuster action and heartfelt storytelling that could redefine how the MCU concludes its current cycle.
Simu Liu’s comments about Avengers: Doomsday hint at a deeply emotional, genre-spanning crossover, raising expectations for the MCU’s most pivotal chapter yet.
