Toronto Hydro has confirmed that power has been restored to customers in the Moss Park neighborhood more than a full day after a major outage began on Wednesday morning.
Nearly 600 residents lost electricity at approximately 8:11 a.m. due to an underground cable fault. According to the utility, service returned around 1 p.m. on Thursday.
“As our crews continue underground repairs, we’ve identified that the cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro said in a social media update posted around 4:30 p.m.
The company explained that the incident was not related to its own operations but likely caused significant damage to its network infrastructure.
“The repair process was complex and time-consuming due to the location of the fault. It involves safely identifying, repairing, and testing the damaged infrastructure before returning it to service,” Toronto Hydro said in a follow-up message.
Earlier in the day, the utility had projected several possible restoration times—from about 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.—but later confirmed power would not return until the afternoon due to the extensive damage.
“The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots,” said Toronto Hydro.
