Authorities reported several confrontations in Birmingham ahead of Aston Villa’s Europa League game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Police confirmed six arrests related to the incidents.
“Our mission is to give young people a positive outlet to channel their emotions and frustrations through football, especially during the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” said Abu Umaymah, founder of the Palestine Football Academy.
He further emphasized that young athletes are demanding the suspension of all Israeli teams from UEFA and FIFA competitions. Umaymah noted that many Israeli players serve or have served in the IDF, illustrating the political dimensions tied to the issue. He compared this to the rapid suspension of Russia from football after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Fan groups from clubs such as Celtic, PSG, and Liverpool echoed the call to suspend Israeli teams. A petition signed by over 50 professional athletes, including Paul Pogba, Hakim Ziyech, and Anwar El Ghazi, reflected the increasing awareness and activism within global football.
A peaceful protest took place with notable attendance. Police praised the collaboration between organizations that helped maintain safety. Organizers had issued prior guidance urging participants to remain peaceful, avoid conflict, and show respect for emergency workers.
“In my view, the most responsible decision would've been to cancel the match,” added Abu Umaymah.
Clashes in Birmingham led to arrests before Aston Villa’s match, as activists urged football bodies to act against Israeli teams and promote peace through sport.
