After leaving Florida, Will Richard has found a home in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. Selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft, he has already become a reliable contributor under coach Steve Kerr and is considered one of the early steals of the draft.
As Richard’s role on the team grows, fans are getting to know him better. During a recent interview with 95.7 The Game in San Francisco, he revealed the fitting nickname his teammates have given him.
“They call Al [Horford] 'Big Gator,' so I'm 'Baby Gator' right now. It's either 'Rook' or 'Baby Gator.'”
In a full-circle moment, Richard now plays alongside Florida legend Al Horford, who joined the Warriors during the offseason after his time with the Boston Celtics. Horford is in his 19th NBA season, while Richard is just beginning his professional journey. When Horford and the Gators won their first national championship in 2006, Richard was only three years old.
Richard also shared what it means to play with Golden State’s veteran stars, including Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler.
“I grew up watching these guys. To witness their greatness every game and every practice is a blessing. I take a step back every day and realize how thankful I am to be in this situation.”
Six games into his career, Richard is averaging 5.7 points per game over 13 minutes of play.
Will Richard, now with Golden State, embraces the “Baby Gator” nickname as he learns and grows alongside veterans like Al Horford, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green.
