Before the new Big Brother Australia contestants were selected, TV WEEK received an exclusive invitation to observe what really happens during the casting sessions.
When Channel 10 announced the return of Big Brother with a format that stayed true to the early seasons, excitement spread quickly. The house is back on the Gold Coast, with live nominations, evictions, and even a 24-hour livestream.
Executive Network Producer Sarah Thornton emphasized that the new series is not looking to fill the house with online influencers like many other reality shows. Instead, her team aims to feature a genuine mix of people from different backgrounds, age groups, and lifestyles—much like the early days of Big Brother.
“We’re determined to find people from all backgrounds, ages, and walks of life,” said Sarah Thornton.
Sarah invited the writer to witness one of the casting sessions held in cities across the country. On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, they arrived at a modest Sydney hotel, where hopeful applicants entered one by one to face a panel of five executives.
Each candidate was questioned about their life and personality. Some interviews lasted only a few minutes, while others impressed the judges with humor, warmth, and charisma.
“We can see as many as 60 people in a single day—it’s tiring, but sometimes it’s absolutely magical,” shared Sarah Thornton. “I love how generous people are.”
The revived Big Brother Australia keeps its original spirit through diverse casting sessions focused on authentic people, offering a glimpse of humanity, humor, and heart behind reality TV.
