The National Transport Authority (NTA) has been asked to address public transport problems in Clondalkin following concerns raised at a recent community forum. Residents have faced ongoing difficulties due to unreliable bus services, prompting calls for NTA representatives to attend future meetings on the matter.
Councillor Darragh Adelaide highlighted the impact of these transport issues on local residents. The 13 bus route, in particular, has been identified as highly problematic.
“The 13 coming through Clondalkin was listed as one of the most cancelled buses in Dublin.
These are issues that are affecting a lot of people, particularly older people who, if a bus is cancelled, they’re left there waiting in the cold.
Same with people with disabilities, people with young kids, but also people trying to get to work.”
On Wednesday, October 15, the 13 bus was cancelled 21 times, representing a cancellation rate of 13%. Most of these cancellations occurred close to the route's starting point at Grange Castle on the way to Mountjoy Square.
Councillor Eoin Ó Broin mentioned that some buses have skipped the Bawnogue area, which is currently undergoing construction work. This practice appears to be an attempt to make up lost time and avoid fines from the NTA for delays.
“What can happen is that the bus skips Bawnogue in order to get back on track because when they’re late, they get fined by the NTA.”
Summary: Persistent cancellations and route deviations on the 13 bus in Clondalkin create significant challenges for vulnerable residents, prompting calls for stronger oversight and solutions from the transport authority.
