The Los Angeles Lakers have opened the 2025–26 NBA season with an impressive 6–2 record, led by five-time All-NBA First Team player Luka Dončić and rising star Austin Reaves. Meanwhile, veteran forward LeBron James, a 21-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion, has yet to make his season debut following a preseason sciatica diagnosis.
Despite the setback, the 40-year-old legend is steadily progressing toward a comeback. Recent reports suggest that James is closing in on full basketball activity and may soon rejoin team practices.
“LeBron James has been working out individually, and I'm told the next step for him is 5-on-5, live play,” reported Shams Charania during ESPN’s NBA Countdown with Malika Andrews.
Charania added that Lakers personnel expect James to return around mid-November, though his recovery remains carefully managed given his longevity and age. Entering his 23rd NBA season, James continues to push physical boundaries rarely seen in professional sports.
“He turns 41 next month, he's in his 23rd NBA season and that’s why Rob Pelinka’s three offseason signings—Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton, and Marcus Smart—have been invaluable in maintaining depth without one of the greatest players of all time.”
With James nearing a comeback, the Lakers are poised to strengthen their already formidable lineup, aiming to build on their strong start to the season.
LeBron James is nearing a mid-November return as the Lakers thrive early in the season, relying on new additions while awaiting their veteran star’s comeback.
