FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has a close personal relationship with US President Donald Trump, described Trump as “a close friend” and expressed admiration for his energy and direct approach.
FIFA has created a new annual award named the FIFA Peace Prize, intended to honor “exceptional actions for peace.” The inaugural award will be presented during the World Cup draw on December 5, held at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
“In an increasingly unsettled and divided world, it’s fundamental to recognise the outstanding contribution of those who work hard to end conflicts and bring people together in a spirit of peace.”
— Gianni Infantino, FIFA President
FIFA emphasized that the Peace Prize will be awarded annually “on behalf of fans from all around the world.”
According to The New York Times, Infantino and Trump have developed a notably close relationship over the years, including multiple visits to the White House and joint appearances abroad.
The launch of the FIFA Peace Prize highlights the sport’s commitment to peace, with the possibility of President Trump being its first recipient sparking notable attention.
