Hull KR CEO Explains World Club Challenge Venue Switch

Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why the upcoming World Club Challenge will take place at the MKM Stadium, the home ground of their rivals Hull FC. The match will feature next year’s clash between the two best club teams in rugby league, the Robins and Brisbane Broncos.

Reasoning Behind Venue Change

Lakin emphasized that hosting the event in Hull was always the priority, highlighting the city's significance in rugby league. Due to Craven Park's limited capacity, which made it unfeasible to accommodate the expected crowd, the decision was made to move the game to the MKM Stadium across the city.

He stated:

“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull.”

Though Elland Road was briefly considered as an alternative venue, it was ultimately ruled out.

Financial and Fan Considerations

Lakin underlined the financial logic and fan demand driving the move. He wants as many supporters as possible to enjoy the game and noted that the players themselves seek to perform on the biggest stage.

“For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.”
“It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible. The players we have in our side, they want to play on the biggest stage possible.”

Lakin also stated he has no issues with Hull FC fans filling the MKM Stadium to support the Brisbane Broncos.

Summary

The venue change balances financial viability with fan experience while keeping the prestigious event within Hull’s rugby league community.

Author's summary: The decision to move the World Club Challenge to Hull FC’s MKM Stadium ensures maximum attendance and keeps the event in Hull, reflecting smart financial planning and respect for rugby league fans.
