Broadcaster and cancer fundraiser Carrie Bickmore OAM was honored as the 2026 Australian of the Year for Victoria at a ceremony held in Melbourne on November 6.
Since 2015, Bickmore has raised over $27 million to support brain cancer research. In 2021, she founded The Brain Cancer Centre, which unites leading researchers to advance the search for a cure.
The centre funds nationwide research projects and is pioneering clinical trials for brain cancer patients, the first of their kind globally.
Brain cancer kills more Australian children than any other disease, and more people under 40 than any other cancer.
Bickmore’s commitment is deeply personal, as her late husband Greg succumbed to brain cancer in 2010.
These recognitions highlight significant contributions to health, social welfare, and youth achievements in Victoria.
Author’s summary: Carrie Bickmore received the 2026 Australian of the Year title for Victoria, recognized for raising millions and pioneering research to combat brain cancer, alongside other notable awardees.
