Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty, who portrayed half-brothers Lucas and Nathan Scott on One Tree Hill, joined PEOPLE for the Sexiest Man Alive issue to share their experiences and insights from the hit series.
It has been 22 years since the actors first stepped onto the River Court as basketball-playing brothers on One Tree Hill, which aired from 2003 to 2012. While their characters often clashed on-screen, offscreen the relationship between Murray and Lafferty has always been friendly and full of laughter.
“The only times I couldn’t stop laughing were when I was shooting scenes with him,” says Lafferty, 40. “It was only good times,” adds Murray, 44. “Really, really good times.”
Both actors reminisced about their connection to the basketball aspect of their characters. Lafferty recalled his audition experience and preparation:
“During auditions I had to play one-on-one and failed miserably. I immediately got a basketball coach for the summer.”
He also mentioned his background:
“I played basketball in high school and I was not much older than the actual character, so it was right up my alley.”
In their interview, they also delved into the long-standing fan debate between the ships “Naley” (Nathan and Haley) and “Leyton” (Lucas and Peyton), sharing their perspectives on the show’s lore.
