Storm warning issued in three US states as heavy snow threatens travel

Storm Warning Across Three US States as Heavy Snow Approaches

A winter storm alert has been declared across parts of Alaska, Wyoming, and Washington, with officials warning of hazardous travel conditions due to heavy snowfall and strong winds.

Severe Weather Forecasts

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that some regions could experience between 9 and 16 inches of snow starting Thursday, leading to dangerous driving conditions and limited visibility.

Alaska

In Thompson Pass, Alaska, approximately nine inches of snow are expected through the evening. The NWS warns that wind gusts up to 40 mph could reduce visibility to half a mile or less, likely affecting both the morning and evening commutes.

"Strong winds reaching up to 40mph are expected to peak early Thursday afternoon, reducing visibility to around half a mile or less."

Residents are urged to use caution outdoors as icy and slippery surfaces may increase the risk of falls and minor injuries.

Wyoming

In Wyoming, snowfall between four and eight inches is forecast for the Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains. Higher elevations in the Tetons could see up to a foot of snow by Thursday afternoon, accompanied by 40 mph winds that could hinder travel, particularly along Teton and Togwotee passes.

Washington

In Washington State, the Cascades, including Whatcom and Skagit counties and the Washington Pass, could accumulate as much as 16 inches of snow through Friday morning, most notably above 4,000 feet.

Safety Advisory

Author’s summary: A major winter storm threatens Alaska, Wyoming, and Washington with up to 16 inches of snow, intense winds, and difficult travel conditions through the end of the week.
