Cambrian College will launch a Dental Assisting program starting this January, responding to the rising demand for qualified dental staff in Northern Ontario. The program combines online courses with weekend sessions on campus, enabling students to earn their certificate over 10 months while continuing to work.
Alongside coursework, students complete a seven-week placement to gain practical experience within a dental practice, enhancing their hands-on skills.
“Dental assistants play a vital role in supporting dentists and dental hygienists, and enhancing patient care,” said Rachel Steels, dean of Cambrian’s School of Health Sciences.
These duties highlight the essential clinical and administrative roles dental assistants fulfill to support dental teams effectively.
The program was developed in response to ongoing workforce shortages, particularly in underserved Northern Ontario areas. Local dental practices have consistently expressed the need for skilled support staff.
“Dental assistants are essential members of the oral health care team,” added Steels. “We are proud to offer this program, helping students launch rewarding careers while supporting the delivery of quality oral health care in our communities.”
Cambrian College’s initiative aims to strengthen dental care by preparing competent professionals ready to meet regional demands.
