Scientists are calling for more research to understand the role of environmental factors, such as exposure to chemicals, in animal color change anomalies.
Some animals, like chameleons, octopuses, cuttlefish, and snowshoe hares, naturally change color. However, the appearance of a white Iberian lynx in Spain's Jaén province is surprising. The female lynx, Satureja, has lost her natural brown and orange tones, but retained her unique black spots.
No one knows the reason for this striking change in coat color, which had already been observed in another lynx previously.
Despite the mystery, the black spots on Satureja serve as a natural ID, allowing researchers to distinguish her from other lynxes.
