Nigeria’s entertainment industry is in mourning following the deaths of two popular figures: Kannywood actor Yakubu Mato, also known as Malam Nata’ala, and live-band singer Akinloye Tofowomo, known as Akiin Shuga.
Malam Nata’ala, famous for his role in the Hausa TV drama Dadin Kowa, died on Sunday after a prolonged illness at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. His health had sparked concern among fans, prompting public fundraising efforts and government support.
On the same day, news broke of the passing of Akiin Shuga, the lead singer of the Shuga Band, who died at 50 in New Brunswick, Canada. His family announced that he passed away on October 30 but confirmed the news on November 3.
Akiin Shuga, a polio survivor and music entrepreneur, was celebrated for redefining live performance in Nigeria.
