Latvia: President Must Reverse Parliament's Decision

Responding to the Latvian parliament's vote to leave the Council of Europe convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, also known as the Istanbul Convention, Amnesty International's Senior Campaigner on Women's Rights, Monica Costa Riba, said:

Latvia's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention would be a devastating blow to the protection and rights of the country's women and girls and all people facing domestic violence. It sends a reckless and dangerous message to perpetrators that they can abuse and kill women and girls with impunity.

Amnesty International is 100% independent and free to campaign with objectivity and impartiality.

Author's summary: Latvia's parliament voted to leave the Istanbul Convention.
