Rehearsals are underway for Theatre by the Lake's production of The Wizard of Oz with a Cumbrian twist.
The production, set over Christmas, is a new adaptation of the classic tale, set in the Lake District.
The story follows Dorothy, from a Cumbrian cottage, who dreams of London and is whisked away to Oz by a storm.
She journeys down the yellow brick road with Toto, meeting flying monkeys, wicked witches, and friends, including a lion, tinwoman, and scarecrow.
At first, we talked about keeping it in Kansas, like the original, because there are similarities, the rural landscape, the open skies, that feeling of distance. But rooting it in Cumbria made the story feel completely fresh.
Author's summary: Wizard of Oz gets Cumbrian twist.
