Calling for changes in USMCA to build fair and resilient rural economies

Calling for Changes in USMCA

The current review of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) presents an opportunity to address changes and fix problems that have arisen during its implementation.

On October 28, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), the National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC), and the Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) submitted joint comments on the review, calling on negotiators to make changes.

Over 680 organizations issued a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) in June, calling for changes on labor, environment, investment, digital commerce, and rural economies.

A series of changes are needed to build fair and resilient rural economies.

The submission highlighted the need for changes to address problems that have become apparent since the agreement was enacted in 2020.

Author's summary: Calling for USMCA changes to support rural economies.
