Wu Yanju, 44, was born in a village in Yuzhou, central Henan province, in a poor family where he had to sleep in a room shared with the livestock his parents raised, as reported by Jimu News.

Although Wu studied well, hoping to change his fate through education, he left school at the age of 15 due to his parents' inability to support his studies. He then took up a manual labor job at a mine near his village, where his father also worked.
Tragedy struck when Wu's right eye was seriously injured while moving rocks, but this did not deter him from finding true love.
