Two separate scams are targeting individuals in Yukon, one posing as a donation collector for the Royal Canadian Legion and another claiming to be from government Motor Vehicle Services.
Joseph Mewett, president of the Whitehorse branch of the Legion, reported that scammers called asking for money, but when prompted for details, they refused to provide information.
“When we prompted them like, ‘what’s the money being used for? What’s your name?’ Things like that, they wouldn’t give any of that information,”
Mewett emphasized that the Legion never calls individuals for donations, instead collecting funds through the poppy campaign for veterans or in-person requests to businesses.
Mewett reported the scam to the RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
