Dozens of students in Oakland and almost 50 other California high schools walked out of class on Friday to support the "Make Polluters Pay Superfund Act".
This state climate bill includes SB 684 in the Senate and AB 1243 in the Assembly.
"The Climate Superfund bill would require the top fossil fuel polluters, big oil, to pay their fair share for the climate crisis," said Isabel Penman, an organizer with Food and Water Watch.
Similar bills have been passed in New York and Vermont, with the goal of investing in climate resiliency programs.
