New research uncovers how the brain’s activity, energy use, and blood flow change as people fall asleep

Brain Activity During Sleep

Researchers from Mass General Brigham conducted a study to investigate changes in brain activity, energy use, and blood flow as people fall asleep.

Using next-generation imaging technology, they discovered a coordinated shift in brain activity during sleep.

Findings

The study found that during NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep, areas of the brain responsible for movement and sensory input remain active and continue to use energy.

In contrast, areas involved in thinking, memory, and daydreaming become less active and use less energy.

The results of the study were published in Nature Communications.

The brain shows a coordinated shift in activity when falling asleep.

Author's summary: Brain activity changes during sleep.
