A new documentary film, "Preserved," delves into the history and conservation work at Ted Turner's Vermejo Reserve, spanning 560,000 acres in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.
The Vermejo Reserve, purchased by Ted Turner in 1996, encompasses miles of wilderness, ranchland, and former coal mines, extending from west of Raton, New Mexico, into Colorado.
"What's really unique is how many ecosystems it crosses," said Lance Bernal, the reserve's natural resources manager. "It starts down in the short grass prairie at about 6,000 feet in elevation and goes all the way up to alpine, above timber line, close to 13,000 feet.
