Many popular internet services were offline for hours on Monday due to an outage in Amazon's cloud network.

According to Downdetector, a website monitoring internet problems, mobile telephone services and messaging apps were also affected in Europe.

AWS's maintenance site reported that engineers scrambled to fix the underlying DNS issue after becoming aware of "increased error rates" at 0711 GMT.
