A new California law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to protect private data from the federal government by reversing a data sharing law meant to increase CalFresh enrollment.
The law, Assembly Bill 593, introduced by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, a Democrat from Oakland, prohibits state and local departments from sharing sensitive personal data to boost food stamp enrollment.
The new limitations are in response to the federal government’s attempts to collect private data.
The move is seen as a step to safeguard Californians' private information. For more news and commentary on California issues, sign up for WhatMatters.
