June West Brandt's older brother was killed in World War II, and she has always remembered him fondly. Recently, she discovered that a Dutch couple, Lisa and Guido Meijers, regularly visit his marker at a Netherlands cemetery.
“It’s wonderful for me to know that someone is there,”
said Brandt, 93, who lives near Houston. This introduction was made possible by a new initiative aiming to increase connections between American family members of those buried or remembered at the WWII cemetery and the Dutch people who have adopted each one.
The project brings together Americans and Dutch individuals who honor their relatives at the World War II cemetery.
