Democracy Melted in Front of the Capitol Yesterday
A 3,000-pound ice sculpture spelling out "DEMOCRACY" was placed in front of the US Capitol to symbolize the fears of artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese.
The sculpture "speaks to America's weakened democracy and the costs of its failure amid growing militarism and authoritarianism.
The sculpture was part of the "Last Call–DemocracyICED" event, organized in partnership with Up In Arms, an organization founded by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's.
The heat led to the sculpture melting, symbolizing the "visceral loss" of democracy.
