Impact of Speed on Electric Vehicle Range
High-speed highway driving significantly reduces the range of electric vehicles (EVs), while low-speed driving can help achieve or even exceed the manufacturer's range claim.
A recent Eurocharge 2025 EV road trip demonstrated the substantial impact of speed on EV range. On days with mostly highway driving at 80 mph (130 km/h), all eight EVs in the group lost around 40% of their range.
In contrast, driving on national roads with lower speed limits, typically 56 mph (90 km/h) or lower, allowed the EVs to come close to their WLTP range and efficiency numbers.
Slow down, and you might actually achieve your EV's official claim. Practice right foot restraint, and you may even exceed it.
Author's summary: Speed greatly affects EV range.
