Pattern is one of decorating’s greatest magic tricks, able to expand or contract a space, alter a mood or pull a scheme together with one single swish of fabric or sheet of wallpaper.
According to interior designer Chloe Willis, associate director at Sybil Colefax & John Fowler,
“You don’t need to be constrained by the scale of the pattern… You have to decide the feeling you want and use the pattern with purpose.”
The size of the pattern can transform a space, and designers reveal that getting the proportions right makes all the difference between harmony and visual chaos.
In the main bedroom of decorator Cindy Leveson's London flat, Colefax & Fowler's, ‘Sudbury Park’ wallpaper in blue acts as a ‘barely-there’ backdrop to the space, demonstrating how scale can be used to create a specific mood.
