KiwiRail Confirms Sale Of Aratere Ferry For Recycling In India

KiwiRail has announced the sale of its retired Interislander ferry, Aratere, to a buyer in India for recycling.

The Aratere ferry had been part of the Interislander fleet for 26 years and completed its final Cook Strait crossing in August.

According to Duncan Roy, Interislander’s executive general manager, the decision to retire the ferry was driven by its age and the need for significant modifications or specialist port infrastructure for continued operation.

Therefore, we have pursued a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible recycling option.

The retirement of the Aratere ferry comes as Picton port undergoes redevelopment in preparation for two new Cook Strait ferries expected to arrive in 2029.
