Native Americans in Nevada Renew Push for Indigenous Peoples' Day
As President Donald Trump's Columbus Day proclamation pledges to "reclaim" the holiday honoring the Italian explorer, Native Americans in Nevada are renewing their call to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day.
This celebration is seen as a better reflection of their heritage and history. According to Michael Green, a professor of history at UNLV,
"The idea of celebrating Columbus goes back in the United States really to the 300th anniversary of when he sailed back in 1792,"he said.
Columbus's actions have been widely criticized, with Green noting that
"Columbus did not do some very nice things, to put it mildly. And in particular, Indigenous people were his victims. There are those who argue that Columbus was guilty of genocide."
