Staff from Georgia’s Public Service Commission have expressed concerns that Georgia Power’s newly proposed plan could lead to sustained increases in customer energy bills.
According to commission analysts, the plan outlines adjustments in how the utility recovers costs for fuel and infrastructure. While Georgia Power argues the proposal will ensure reliable power generation and modernization of the grid, agency staff warn that the changes could burden ratepayers for years.
"Our review indicates that the proposed framework might cause a notable uptick in electricity rates over time," commission staff noted in their report.
Georgia Power representatives responded, stating that such investments are critical to meeting long-term energy demands and maintaining service reliability amid growing consumption.
The Public Service Commission is expected to deliberate on the proposal before the end of the year. Public hearings and written comments will contribute to the final decision on whether to adopt or modify Georgia Power’s plan.
"Our primary responsibility is to balance utility needs with consumer protection," one commissioner emphasized.
