Mahmudul Hasan Joy, absent from the national team for over a year, is nearing a century in his comeback during the first Test against Ireland at Sylhet.
He scored only one century in his previous 18 Tests before this match. His impressive century on the second day of the first Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium put Bangladesh in a strong position against Ireland.
After Ireland was dismissed for 286 in their first innings, Mahmudul Hasan and Shadman Islam established a solid opening partnership of 168 runs for Bangladesh, the fourth-highest opening stand for the country in Test cricket. The record is surpassed only by partnerships involving Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes.
The pitch offered good conditions as the ball came onto the bat easily, and the Irish bowling attack failed to challenge the pair significantly. Their partnership marked the eighth century-plus opening stand for Bangladesh in Tests.
At the time of reporting, Mahmudul Hasan has completed his second Test hundred, batting alongside Mominul Haque.
Born on November 13, 2000, the same day Bangladesh lost its debut Test match against India in Dhaka, Mahmudul Hasan has been referred to as
“the solution to one of Bangladesh cricket's biggest problems”
after his dominant performance against South Africa in Durban 22 years later.
Mahmudul Hasan Joy's return century reaffirms his potential to solve Bangladesh's longstanding batting challenges in Test cricket.
